Blue

I searched every day for a week, looking for any signs of Asher, but every time I returned to the tower, he was nowhere in sight. My heart sank every fucking day, and the raw edge of my grief never seemed to soften.

Jasper told me that Cole was back today. I hadn’t even known he’d been officially gone, and a part of me was kind of pissed that he hadn’t given me a heads-up. But then again who the fuck was I to demand his freaking coordinates every time he left my sight? It wasn’t like we were mates or anything. Yet. Maybe never. Ugh, it was a mess.

Apparently he’d been away on a training exercise with some of the pups preparing for the upcoming trials, which I couldn’t believe I’d forgotten about since they were right around the corner. They’d been stuck up in the higher mountains for the last week with no cell service…not that I would have picked up my phone to call him anyway.

Still, I was feeling bitter and hadn’t looked for him. If he wanted to talk to me about what happened on our mission, then he could come fucking find me like the big boy he was.

It was pouring rain again, so I had to train indoors, which meant jogging up and down the sanctuary halls in the stuffy air. I avoided the main halls, instead using the old servants’ passages to get around. Since coming back here, I’d become somewhat of an expert in avoiding people. I was sure none of them missed me anyway so it was pretty much a win-win.

I decided when I set out for tonight’s jog that I was going back to the tower one more time, and if Asher wasn’t there, then I would forget it and move on. I was tired of getting my hopes up, only to have them stomped on over and over again.

I vaulted up the staircase just like I had every day, going around and around in a seemingly endless spiral of closed and locked doors. Fuck, I was curious and wanted to know what the hell was hiding behind them. For now, I ignored them, taking the steps two at a time with my heart in my throat.

He wasn’t going to be there. I just knew it. It was like I could physically feel his absence. I sniffed the stale air, and my heart nearly cracked when I didn’t pick up any of his ghostly scent. Even his ghost had actually smelled like him, which was weird, but I was so fucking grateful for it. I kept going, stupidly hoping that I was wrong and that when I got to the very top, he’d be right there waiting for me.

I was wrong. Why did I keep doing this shit to myself? Asher was gone, and he wasn’t ever coming back. I had no reasonable explanation for why and how his ghost had paid me a visit after half a year, but a part of me hoped he’d been searching that whole time.
